There is a common misconception that the purpose of writing Haskell programs is to instruct a machine to perform certain computations, and to report the results thereof. This myth is perpetrated by numerous lecture courses, books, websites and other media, which merely teach how to write programs with the desired functionality.

In actual fact, to write a good Haskell program is to create a work of art. As such, any Haskell program worth writing must be beautiful. In fact, rumour has it that the GHC optimiser analyses programs it is asked to compile and, if it finds it aesthetically pleasing, will work harder to make your program run faster.

But what determines whether a Haskell program is beautiful or not? Read on, my intrepid friend, and you shall find out!

All that poop.

When you’re a crowdfunding artist, it shouldn’t matter what your choices are as long as you’re delivering your side of the bargain — the art, the music. It shouldn’t matter whether you’re spending money on guitar picks, rent, printer paper, diapers, college loans, or the special brand of organic absinthe you use to find your late-night muse…. as long as art is making it out the other side and making your patrons happy.

We’re artists, not art factories.

Paint me like one of your norms.

So imagine 17 year old Artemisia trying to approach painting the scene of a woman being assaulted. And she paints what is seen in the x-ray above. A woman in horrifying, grotesque anguish with what appears to be a knife poised in her clenched hand. Damn that shit is real. Who wants to guess that she was advised by, perhaps her father or others, to tone it down. Women can’t look that grotesque. Sexual assault can’t be depicted as that horrifying. And women definitely can’t be seen as having the potential to fight back. Certainly not in artwork. Women need to be soft. They need to wilt from their captors but still look pretty and be a damsel in distress. So she changed it.
